I never wanted to be a teacher. But when I showed up at college orientation, I was quickly told that I wouldn't get a job as "just" an English major. "You should really add education to it so you can be a teacher," I was told repeatedly. So I did. And I was an education major for three whole weeks before I realized something: I had ZERO desire to be a teacher. None. Zip. Nada. So I dropped it, before I even took a single education class. And it was one of the best decisions I ever made, because it opened up my schedule to be able to add on a concentration in writing (what I actually wanted to do) and minors in theology and public relations. It gave me room to take on a whole bunch of campus jobs, including the internship in the marketing office that led to my beloved job after graduation. But here's the funny thing: I never wanted to be a teacher. But God keeps putting me in teaching roles. First as a religious ed teacher. Then as a college professor...and a youth minister (twice)...and a consultant and speaker...and a homeschool mom. And now as a course creator. I think when I didn't want to be a teacher, I was really saying I didn't want to stand in the front of a room at a chalkboard teaching the normal way. Because the truth is that I actually love teaching people things I'm passionate about. Like marketing. And Jesus. (And the Oxford comma, but no one's asked for a course about that yet.) I've always had teaching in me...but I don't teach the "normal" way. Which brings me to my point: I don't want to teach you marketing. I want to help you draw closer to the Lord THROUGH your marketing. I want to accompany you in loving the Lord more deeply and getting to know Him more intimately. And He has given me the gifts to do that really well through teaching you about marketing. Jesus first. Marketing second. It's not how most people teach marketing. Most people focus on the strategies and the platforms and all of that, and you have to kind of bend and shape it into your Catholic business or ministry like a shoe that doesn't quite fit right. But when we start with Jesus and how Jesus used marketing...it all just makes more sense. Even if marketing has always felt hard for you or hasn't worked in the past. So yes...I want to teach you how to grow your business or ministry through marketing because you're doing amazing things for the Lord that the world needs to hear about. But more importantly, I want to help you fall in love with the Lord more. Because when you market from a place of being in love with the Lord, it's a lot less hard and a lot more holy. (And because our Lord is never outdone in generosity...it works better too.) So THAT'S what I teach you in the Market Like Jesus course, which is now open for enrollment! Facebook has been buzzing lately about...well, Facebook. In case you missed it, business pages are now (or soon going to) only be allowed two links per month unless you upgrade (aka pay them) for more. If I was in charge of your parish's social media, here's how I would change our strategy as a result: Step One: First, I would scream into the void. (But seriously...it's not just you. Everything is harder to promote now than it was years ago. And upgrading to get more links is...not cheap....
Well folks, here we are: Q4 has arrived. It kind of feels like what we've been working towards all year, doesn't it? And with that can come the added pressure of needing to get this busy season "right" in terms of marketing, because it's when it matters the most. So if I were you, here's are 5 things I would be prepping for Black Friday / Cyber Monday / Giving Tuesday / Christmas Shopping / "Whatever You Want to Call the Busy Sales Season" promotions: 1. Review your marketing plan. First, I...
One of my favorite underutilized social media strategies is asking "icebreaker" questions. Because if you're like most churches, your goals with social media probably are: Help parishioners know what's going on Spread the word about your parish to those not already involved Grow relationships among your parishioners And asking questions on social media that get people to comment and share will help you do all three! Because when someone responds to a question: It's a big sign to the algorithm...
